On December 7 and December 8, 2011, in Princeton and Grand Rapids, Minnesota, the Will Steger Foundation, the Lutheran Coalition for Public Policy in Minnesota, and Fresh Energy joined together to present public forums on Clean Air, Climate, and Health, with keynote speaker Will Steger.

At the Grand Rapids forum, Bishop Tom Aitkin of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America offered faith reflections on climate change and clean air. Sponsors included the Northeastern Minnesota Women of the ELCA, the Trinity Lutheran Church (Princeton) Creation Care Team, Saint Andrew’s Lutheran Church (Grand Rapids), the Creation Care and Hunger committees of the Northeastern Minnesota Synod, Congregations Caring for the Earth, and the Northwestern Minnesota Synod of the ELCA.

The Clean Air Act has a 40-year track record of cutting dangerous pollution to protect human health and welfare. Administered by the Environmental Protection Agency, the law prevents thousands of premature deaths each year, and averts hundreds of thousands of asthma attacks, cases of respiratory illness, and cardiovascular disease. Families in Minnesota count on the EPA to carry out its responsibilities to reduce emissions that harm human health.

The concerned Minnesotans at the December forums were especially concerned about threats to clean air policies that scientists and public health experts have recommended to safeguard our air quality. They signed over 100 postcards at each event addressed to Congressman Cravaack and Senator Klobuchar asking them to support clean air policies administered by the Environmental Protection Agency to protect the health of our children and families.
